By the time we reach the album's nadir, Persson's truly glorious finale, "Le Fruit Defendu" (named for a Belgian beer), a quirky, semi-Latin-tinged romance of a tune with flatted fourths stuttering across the beautiful, chordal harmonic body so gracefully fleshed out by the rhythm section, we are left breathless. So, too, on his nod to Bill Evans on "Waltz for Billy," the shimmering glissando in the opening line, replete with ghost-like traces of chord voicings and spare use of right-hand construction, is so elegant and graceful, one would think that Evans tutored Persson himself - especially in the opening section, where before the changes are established, the quote from "Waltz for Debby" slips in almost imperceptibly.
While an inverted harmonic sequence based on augmented changes in "Nature Boy" or a contrapuntal bassline in "All of You" might be interesting and even compelling, the strident lyricism of Persson's "Berlin" - with its angular figures coming right from the heart of his harmonic architecture and intervallic invention - is quite literally amazing. There are standards such as "I'll Remember April," "Bye Bye Blackbird," and "Autumn in New York," as well as some well-known but not-often-played gems such as John Lewis' "Django." There are also five tunes by Persson, which are easily the most interesting things here. The program here is a well-paced, phenomenally played compendium of jazz sources. At large is his third record as a leader, recorded in 1996 with his long-standing trio that includes bassist Yasuhito Mori and drummer Magnus Gran. While there are few stateside jazz fans familiar with the intimate and lyrical pianism of Anders Persson, Europeans and touring American musicians know him well.
